Bayan DSL Speed Increase

Bayantel DSL Speedtest

Thanks to J. Angelo’s heads-up on the recent speed upgrade of Sky DSL / Bayantel DSL (which has been rebranded as Bayan DSL), I’m now squeezing more juice out of my Plan 1699 connection. From a max speed of 768 Kbps, I’m now due for 1280 Kbps, which is burstable to 1536 Kbps during off-peak hours.

Existing users will need to call Bayan DSL’s customer service to get this free upgrade. Just dial 411200, or better yet, dial 171 from your Bayan phone (if you have one).

Update: Here’s what I got with Bayan’s Speed-on-Demand:

Dreamhost Sucks

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Know our Komiks.ph story here.

Each to his own, as they say, but if you would hear my unsolicited advice, it would be: Don’t use Dreamhost. Well, maybe, if you’re American or can easily threaten them with legal action. But if you’re from a Third World country, stay away.

Now Powered by BayanTel DSL

bayantel logoAfter almost nine years of putting up with dial-up connections, we’ve finally jumped ship and availed ourselves of BayanTel DSL’s 768 kbps plan. The DSL modem was installed just last Thursday, and now I’m happily torrenting away some good stuff (don’t ask me what).

URLs: No WWW or Yes WWW?

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Personally, I don’t use the www when visiting websites, chiefly because I’m a lazy typer. This has led to several encounters with “Server not found” errors, because some sites need to have that www in their addresses (one example of which is the UP Diliman website).

Ia, our guest writer of several days past, has written about the www issue in our Go-Ogle! Isulong SEOPH blog. She writes:

In order to market your URL properly it has got to be memorable; that’s one of the basic things to consider when choosing a domain name…So if you’re all for convenience, stripping the WWW out should seem logical. It’s basic knowledge that the more things you throw at a person, the more difficult it is to remember.

Of Laptops and Airport X-Ray Machines

I’ll be going on another brief family reunion slash vacation tomorrow to Kalibo, Aklan. As with my last trip to our home province, I’ll be attending a wedding (and playing some rounds of DoTa, I guess). But this time around, I’ll be able to take my work with me, courtesy of Corsarify.

Needless to say, my laptop’s first out-of-town trip includes passing through the airport security checks. This begs an important question: Is it safe to let my laptop through the X-ray machine? Wouldn’t my data be obliterated, my job wrecked, and my life ruined? (Ok, I’ll stop.)

How to Download and Save YouTube Videos

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Well, another way to put it would be “How to Leech YouTube Videos“, but it sounds a bit criminal. Anyway, the Net abounds with tricks on how to download the Flash videos on YouTube. The common results in search engines involves browsing through Mozilla Firefox’s cache (about:cache), or installing a browser extension.

However, both methods require some manual effort before you can actually see the video file. (more…)
