TagBux: Library Labeling WebApp
Please support my friend Noel’s research study:
Good day!
I’m an undergraduate student from the UP School of Library and Information Studies who is presently working on a study entitled TagBux, a tool to determine the effectiveness and relevance of tags on a library’s collection. The library collection that was chosen for this study is the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Diliman Library. Through this study, library users will be able to discover the popular topics or the current trends in a library’s collection through the frequencies of tags.

What is TagBux ?
TagBux is a Web 2.0 application developed through Open Source technologies (Java EE and Wordpress) and patterned from social networking applications such as Shelfari. It lets you use tags to assign labels to books and was designed to test the accuracy of tagging as compared to the subject headings assigned to books. The library collection that was chosen for this study is the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Diliman Library. Through this study, library users will be able to discover the popular topics or genres in a library’s collection through the frequencies of tags.
What are tags ?
Tags are one-word descriptors that you can assign to items. In the case of 2 words (word1 and word2) for a single tag, you may tag an item as either word1_word2 or word1word2. You can assign as many tags to an item as you like.
Although there are NO wrong tags, they are categorized into Personal, Subjective, and Factual.
- Personal tags pertain to how a user organizes his/her own resources. (e.g. myreference)
- Subjective tags show a user’s opinions about a resource in terms of qualities or characteristics. (e.g. handy)
- Factual tags associate what a resource is all about. (e.g. math)
Being one of the primary users of TagBux, your participation is needed for the result of this experiment. Kindly spend some time in this activity by searching at least 10 books that are significant to you (e.g. your favorite books) and tagging them. Describe each book by assigning as many tags as you like. Lastly, don’t forget to fill-up the feedback form after tagging the minimum number of books.
There are no right and wrong answers in this activity. I would greatly appreciate your taking a few minutes necessary to complete this experiment. Please be assured that all responses will remain strictly confidential.
As a special incentive for your time, all participants shall receive a link love from my personal blog to your website/blog.
Now go and SEARCH a book, SELECT it, ADD TAGS to it, and fill up the FEEDBACK form.
Thank you in advance for your help!
Yours sincerely,
Noel Feria
