Taking My Aircraft Geekery to the Next Level
Last week, I requested a free catalog from AirplaneShop.com, a site I regularly visit, being a collector of miniature aircraft models. The site offers tons of great models, many of which are sold at discounted prices (50%!). Still, I haven’t made a single purchase.
I just might, very soon.
To my pleasant surprise, the free catalog arrived just this morning. A surprise, because I really didn’t expect them to send me a free magazine halfway around the world from New Jersey. Add to that the fact that the site footer reads “Copyright 2004″, which I took as a sign of stagnation or even company death.
I’ve just barely skimmed through the catalog’s pages (which smell a lot like Magic: The Gathering cards — I used to collect and play them a lifetime ago). Already I feel my hands’ nerve endings pulsate wildly, as if coaching the brain, “Reach out for the wallet and pull out those rarely-used credit cards!”
My geekeries are limited to buying stuff from local shops. That ceased to be the case a few weeks ago, when I placed an order for ten backissues of D&D magazines and several dragon miniatures. (Why? My post on Gadzooki has the answer.) When I buy from AirplaneShop.com (Cebu Pacific models?), it’s going to be the second online purchase I’ll make, and it looks like it won’t be the last.
Now, where do I put all these planes? Time to buy a new house.

A new house?!?!?! Ain’t you the rich one!
I think there’s a whole culture to ordering catalogs (only) that’s a bit thrilling and tacky at the same time, but I have yet to experience.

Ia, that was just silly dreaming
I now plan to go around several big airplane shop sites and request for a catalog. Whichever sends me one, I’ll seriously consider buying from ‘em.
Kee, request a catalog! You’ll receive it in no time
And while you’re at it, do drop by my airplane models blog (better if you subscribe to it, as I’m quite irregular when updating it).
Garro, feh. I didn’t know you had a Gundam collection — that gives me an idea for a “Lei” clone. Whatchathink? Haha.
