Fallout 3: When?

fallout 3 pc game“War. War never changes.”

Remember the classic PC role-playing games Fallout 1 and 2? That iconic phrase comes from the introduction cutscenes of both games. If you didn’t know already, the next installment in the venerable franchise is being developed by Bethesda, and I can’t frigging wait to see the new face of one of my all-time favorite games.

From a recent CVG article:

[Bethesda's] Pete Hines has been speaking about the sequel in an interview with Gamasutra and, while beans weren’t exactly spilled, we were interested to hear that Bethesda is “already several years into the project.”…Hines explained that the developer won’t do the grand reveal until there’s something there to really get our teeth into.

Make no mistake about it — when Fallout 3 launches, I’ll be losing half my waking hours again.

The original Fallout games were published by Interplay, one of the companies that shaped my early gaming life. Fallout’s license was passed to Bethesda when Interplay sadly went bankrupt. Bethesda, on the other hand, is popular for its critically-acclaimed Elder Scrolls RPG series. (One of my current regrets is not having played any game in the franchise — today it’s too much work, and yesteryears it was too much Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Might and Magic…too many good games around!)

fallout 2 pc gameDuring my high school days, Fallout 2 was one of the main culprits behind my ridiculously low math scores, hehe. I never got to finish the story, but I did install the game five times — the computer crashes, I reinstall, crashes, reinstall, rinse and repeat.

I just hope that Bethesda will do a fine job with Fallout 3; I’ve read a lot of Diggers express their doubts. Interplay and Black Isle Studios wowed us Fallout junkies back then…can Bethesda best them? I sure hope so.

fallout tactics wasn’t that good imo. I hope they stay truthful to the open world formula this time.

too bad we don’t get Christmas and summer vacations anymore. hehe.

…the end of the world came pretty much as we expected…

Damn you bring back memories. You don’t know this but I got through Fallout 1 & 2 on a 486 with something like 8 megs of ram and a sub 100MhZ clockspeed, way below required specs I think, but I made do. Load times were a b*tch, around 15 minutes at times - I got through it by practicing guitar while waiting.

A kiss to build a dream on became one of my favorite songs.

And man, the Gauss Rifle has got to be one of the best single shot gun ever made.

    Like I said, memories :D

Note to self: must blog about this. LOL.

Garro, I agree with you. One of the main reasons behind the people’s doubting Bethesda’s development of the game is that they might turn it into something more Elder Scrolls than the original Fallout, hehe. Even if Bethesda produces a faithful rendition, I’ll still miss the wit and unique touch of Interplay and Black Isle.

Jorge, holy s__, I almost forgot that line! As iconic as the first phrase. And thanks for your comment — you bring back memories, too. Because of your comment, I’m now enjoying Louis Armstrong’s A Kiss to Build a Dream On. Definitely a classic.

Oh, and load times were a b*tch, too, in my experience, hehe. Hey, send me a trackback when you blog about Fallout, so I’d be the first to know! :P

Oh my, oh my, oh my…

I got 1, 2, and Tactics and I’ve been waiting for this release for years.

  5. Corsarius Says:

Fleeb, I’ll admit, I never played Tactics. And I was on the brink of forgetting the whole franchise if not for an article on Digg, hehe! :P But once Fallout 3 hits, it’ll be deja vu.

    “War, war never changes…”

Haha. I remember spending a year trying to get all the possible endings in each of the towns in Fallout 2. Jeez, those were the days.

I just hope they don’t make the mistake of Brotherhood of Steel or Tactics. I hope that the gameplay complete with the witty NPC comments will be back. Only with today’s graphics and smoother rendering. Though I don’t mind the 3/4 view at all.

I wonder what’s the storyline for this.

[...] When Phillip wrote about the possibility of a Fallout 3 in his blog, I knew I had to find out for myself. Can it be true? Can one of the most beloved of game franchises be making a comeback? Apparently so. And I’m just tickled pink about it — no mean feat, that, given my complexion. [...]

I finally got around to writing about Fallout! w00t! ^_^

  9. Corsarius Says:

Alex, kindred spirits we are, then! I spent way too much time going back and forth from one town to the next, not to mention repeatedly scouring the map for random encounters (Dogmeat!). I’m trusting Bethesda to make a great storyline (seeing their work with Elder Scrolls), but it’s the wit/personal touch which they must pay extra attention to :)

Jorge, am more than a week late in reading your post — great write-up, man! And greater illustration to boot! :D

  10.   Three Games to Watch Out For by Gadzooki Says:

[...] Fallout 3 is the highly-anticipated follow-up to Fallout 2, easily one of the best RPGs in history. I blogged about it last February, and the hype-o-meter level for the game remains high. The hype is partly fueled by concerns whether Bethesda, the game’s current license-holders, will be able to match the masterpieces that Interplay crafted. [...]

[...] There was talk of an Arcanum sequel, but unfortunately, Troika Games dissolved after publishing only three games (living up to its name, eh?).
