PayPal for the Philippines!
For the poor souls who’ve long waited for PayPal to land at this archipelago, I hate to douse your hopes but this is not the news you’ve been waiting for. Instead, this is in support of my friend and colleague J Angelo Racoma’s call for change in the existing circumstances that render the Philippines “PayPal-unfriendly”:
PayPal won’t deal with us. It’s probably because we have a history of having potential for money laundering activities. Or maybe it’s because of poor security in banking or credit card transactions.
The point is that we have to lobby for inclusion as a PayPal enabled country.
Why so, you might ask? Why the hell do we have to beg our arses off for PayPal? Well, the comfortability of Philippine online shoppers aside, PayPal would be a great way to expand the nation’s budding knowledge economy (the “K-economy”, as often mentioned by my professor in the University, Dr. Apolinario Nazarea).
It would be better for you to head over to J’s blog for all the details; nevertheless, here are some of his words that I need to stress:
If only we had PayPal in the Philippines, then I think we would be able to open to the world better means to access to our pool of talent.
Having PayPal in the country would greatly benefit the following people:
- Web developers,
- Designers,
- Photographers,
- Writers,
- Pro-bloggers,
and virtually anyone else who can render services remotely while corresponding via the Internet.
All the more I support J’s call, as the short list above applies to me in more ways than one. Fortunately, J Angelo’s doing some homework already, recently sharing his insights with a Philippine statesman. Let’s hope their conversation (along with his blog entry) gets the ball rolling. PayPal for the Philippines!

Thanks for the write-up Phillip. We’ll benefit greatly from the opportunities that PayPal would offer us.

I think it’s just an oversight on their part. Money laundering is not an excuse. Paypal is technically competent and savvy enough to handle that sort of thing. It’s downright annoying already. AAARRRgggh. (venting) hehe.

Jorge and J, here’s one hoping for better times!
Gary, you’re right — the situation’s annoying! But of course, we can’t put all the blame on PayPal, esp. if they’re really quite apprehensive about the Philippines.

OMG, if we could do that…the possibilities are endless. The things I can finally buy from eBay, haha! But then I’d run into Customs and the Philippine Postal System…which is knee-deep in corruption…

Krissy, endless indeed! Endless nightmares, too, with Customs
Though my first and only big package (i.e. PC game) dealing with the postal system was quite smooth. I don’t know if that’s a good enough barometer, hehe.
Anton, thanks for the info, appreciate it.
