Yahoo! Mail Beta Slower Than Gmail?
On a decent dial-up connection of 45.2 kbps (Pacific Internet), without any other data transfers running in the background, loading on Mozilla Firefox:
Yahoo! Mail Beta — 12 seconds (this is far better than at other times)
Gmail ‘Beta’ — 7 seconds
Of course, this doesn’t take into account server loads and other factors. While the above ’statistics’ are not what you’d call ’scientific’, they can nicely sum up my general loading experience with these email services.
I used to think that Gmail was hostile to dial-up users, but with Yahoo! Mail Beta proving to be slower…oh well. Let’s see if Yahoo! Mail’s perfomance improves once it gets out of Beta.

I’m ok with Gmail even in the rare chances I need to use dialup (
get DSL already, will you? ). The longish wait is usually only the first time I load up the page. It’s all AJAXy goodness from that point.
As for Yahoo Mail, well, it’s been eons since I used that!

– I introduce you to the term “frotzed.”
Yea, I used mail clients before I finally switched to GMail. In the transition period I used my Yahoo account for all those email addresses for those offline forms (org infosheets, haha), but it never felt comfortable.

Angelo, I do find Gmail a lot more intuitive to use than Yahoo! Mail (even the new ‘Beta’ version). That’s why most of my Yahoo!Groups are subscribed to Gmail rather than my Yahoo account, hehe.
Ia, thanks for that. I learn something new everyday.
Now I remember — I used to use Hotmail and EdsaMail!

Screw email. Let’s all get back to FIDOmail. The Internet’s overrated, anyway.

Jepoy, thanks for the tip. Gmail does seem to be leading the pack lately, hehe.
Jangelo, screw email. Let’s get back to snail mail!

And I used Gmail’s forwarding feature (the SMTP one) to send e-mails from my own email@domain then my email@domain is simply a forwarder to my Gmail. Aside from the speed, it’s one thing I like about Gmail. I get to keep my email@domain while Gmail takes care of the space.
* Note email@domain = antispam

[...] Don’t get me wrong — I love Gmail. I’d pick it over Yahoo! Mail Beta (another turtle) on any given day. Gmail has become the ‘nerve center’ of my home office communications, and as such, I just want my fast Gmail back! [...]
