Java to Become Open Source
Finally, the news that the IT world has been waiting for! Sun Microsystems has finally seen the light, or more specifically, saw that open source holds the key to Java’s future.
“At this point, it is not a question of whether, but it is a question of how,” said Rich Green, Sun EVP of Software at the annual JavaOne Conference at San Francisco.
According to CNET’s article, “Sun hopes that releasing Java under an Open Source Initiative, or OSI, license will increase the number of Java users.” In addition, several Linux packages such as Ubuntu, Gentoo, and Debian are set to include Java in their next releases.
A related article discusses the release of the source code of more Java-based applications, which serves as a precursor to the imminent “open source Java”. Some of these apps are the Java Studio Creator and Java System Portal Server.
