Korea Building Tech-Paradise City
Rising in South Korea is New Songdo, which ACM Technews describes as an “ubiquitous city where data is shared by all key information systems, and where residences, office buildings, and streets have built-in computers”. Sounds pretty much like a techie’s haven, though of course ’shared data’ reeks of citizen privacy issues.
According to the article:
“…A smart-card house key will be the starting point of U-life: The key can be used to access public transit, process transactions, borrow free materials, etc…New Songdo residents [are foreseen to enjoy] universal wireless access to their digital content and property, video on demand, and videoconferencing calls with neighbors.”
Wow. I believe “U-life” here pertains to Ubiquitous-Life, the lifestyle for the New Songdo “U-City”.

Well that’s a step to unification. Nation-wise I mean. How soon will this be? This is i too bleeding-edge no matter where you are in the world. It’s sort of fun to think that we’re supposed to get there, but how do you get past all the bureaucracy and privacy gunk? I wonder what Vint and Bob have to say about this.
Especially about the information thing.

to ia: The article actually cited New Songdo as some sort of ‘experimenting ground’, which is improbable to have in the Western world because of the privacy/copyright issues tied to shared data.
And yes, “too bleeding-edge” is the apt phrase for this ‘U-City’.

you know what’s disappointing about this tho? NO public transit or subway links! Sad, considering KOrea has such great subways/hi speed traons etc…neighboring Seoul-Incheon has one of the largest and best subways in the world, yet no link to this SOngdo? BAD, BAD !!
